The goal is to just break up the sitting with some movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5200F527-4A36-6D6F-A0FF-A38B6C0ACC83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Several health markers were measured for different combinations of periods spent sitting and walking for this study. Although the sample size was small, the study was rigorous with strong methodology, said Matthew\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.asu.edu\/profile\/1783317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buman, director of the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University<\/a>. Buman was not involved in the study,<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_3F2F6FAC-F5A5-338D-0504-A368BD4CEB4E@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Scientists don\u2019t yet know exactly why sitting is so bad, but the working theory is that muscles are important in regulating things like blood sugar and cholesterol levels. But when you sit for too long, your muscles don\u2019t have the opportunity to contract and operate optimally, Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A194F0B3-4CEB-84BB-1578-A368BD508694@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Does five minutes every half hour still seem like a stretch? Even little \u201cactivity snacks\u201d like one minute of walking every hour was shown to reduce blood pressure in study participants by a \u201csizable amount,\u201d Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_5CECE930-687C-8FCA-CE8F-A38AA2D857FE@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">And all the participants in the study were generally healthy adults, meaning that those with chronic conditions may see an even greater And, as a bonus \u2014 dancing to your favorite tunes will also boost your mood!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_26F23506-8F95-28CB-C853-A368BDB70EE7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">For people with limited mobility or who use wheelchairs, there are still accessible ways to break up sedentary times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_80C08589-29FF-3545-0DA7-A368BDBCC0F8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Everyone should stretch out and move hands in all directions, Santas said.
