Filling a suitcase is a rushed disaster that begins as late as possible and ends in a flurry when our ride to the airport honks in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">But you know who <em>are<\/em> taught to pack, and who treat it like a high art? Marines, soldiers, airmen, and sailors, that\u2019s who. US military servicemembers can probably shoot better than you, stand at attention longer, and almost assuredly pack a tighter, smaller, better-balanced suitcase or backpack than anyone else in your boarding zone. So we\u2019ve interviewed a bunch of them to compile their best packing tips and tricks &#8212; none of which involve sitting on your bag until it barely zips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">First: Find a staging zone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">You want to know the super-surprising way service members become excellent at packing? They practice. Weird, huh? The tip we heard the most was to pack, unpack, and repack your bag a few of times before you depart. Not only does packing and repacking help you get better at it, it also helps you memorize where you put stuff in your bag, so you can quickly access it once you arrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Clear out a staging zone on your bed or garage floor or ping-pong table where you can lay out and organize your gear in advance. Says one Marine: \u201cSetting up a staging zone helps you think through what you\u2019ll need and then pack the bag in the sequence you will need the items inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Which leads to the next tip&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">Pack in reverse order<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">The best way to put together a functional bag, one logistics officer advises, is to pack in \u201creverse order.\u201d Think: The first items in are the last ones to come out. So the pajamas you\u2019ll need on the first night at your destination? Pack those last so they land on the top. The extra pair of pants you may not need? Pack those first, at the bottom of the bag.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">Be strategic about weight<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">If you\u2019re carrying a backpack, your body will thank you. A drill instructor suggested putting \u201cwhatever weighs the most in the center of the backpack and closest to your spine, so it centers the weight on your body rather than pulling back on you.\u201d This makes the bag easier to carry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">The rule applies to suitcases, as well. \u201cBreak your bag into thirds,\u201d a servicemember says. \u201cBottom third is medium weight. Middle third is heavy weight. It\u2019s helpful to fold everything into uniform sizes and shapes because it makes tidier stacks of clothes that fit side-by-side more evenly. Imagine you\u2019re playing <em>Tetris<\/em>, but with folded underwear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">As for bulkier items like jackets, scarves, or sleeping bags, try rolling them instead of folding. Says one servicemember: \u201cShoes and small bags act as bricks (aka building blocks). Shirts, jackets, underwear, and pants act as mortar that fills the space in between.\u201d You\u2019ll end up with a suitcase whose contents are less prone to shifting during flight, as the saying goes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">When in doubt, bring more socks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Speaking of empty space, you might as well plug all of it with rolled-up socks. For example, you might pack a small bag for electronics and their cords, a bag for toiletries, a bag for hats and gloves. No need to get fancy; Ziplocs get the job done, or a zippered cloth bag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">One bag you\u2019ll definitely want to pack on top? A \u201cgo bag,\u201d almost like a floating pocket. One Marine swears by it. \u201cThe contents depend on the trip,\u201d he says, \u201cbut think of things you\u2019ll need quickly and most often: documents\/paperwork, phone charger, headphone, snacks, a couple toiletries, and either a change of clothes or layers depending on the environment.\u201d Naturally this should be at the top of your backpack or suitcase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">Bring only what you need<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Be ruthless about talking yourself into things you \u201cmight\u201d need. Be prepared, but skimp on adding bulk. The ultimate goal, in military parlance, is \u201chigh speed, low drag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">So when you\u2019re in that staging zone, one service member advises, \u201cpull out everything you might need and put it to the side. This will help you pack only the essentials first and fill in extra space with the maybes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">Get the right bag<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Military members are notoriously loyal to their gear, so it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that they advocate getting a backpack or suitcase that you really love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">\u201cI was a gear head before the military, but I think serving has made me even worse,\u201d one service member says. \u201cIf there is a new bag, organization gadget, or lightweight tool, I usually buy it with the excuse that I am really saving weight, time, and space.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding is-full-width\">\n<div class=\"body-text__content\">\n<p class=\"body-text__paragraph-text font--body has-spacing\">Notice he didn\u2019t say \u201cmoney,\u201d but feeling strong, moving fast, and staying small are all benefits that most people would pay handsomely for.
