Purusha Sukta – This is one of the most mysterious hymns of the Rig Veda (10.90)… It describes how the entire cosmos is nothing but the body of a Supreme Being called Purusha.
- Thousands of heads, eyes, and feet are His
- The entire cosmos is just a fraction of His being
- From His body emerged all worlds, beings, and time itself
This is Purusha, the Cosmic Being.
Rig Veda 10.90.1
Sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ Sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt
“The Purusha has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet…”
Not literal numbers, but a vision of infinity… all beings are His parts.
From Him, the universe itself unfolded.
Rig Veda 10.90.3
Pādō’sya viśvā bhūtāni Tripād asyāmṛtam divi
“One quarter of Him became this universe; Three-quarters remain beyond, immortal.”
Only a fragment is creation. The rest is the unseen transcendence.
Purusha is not just the source of life… He is life itself.
All gods, all beings, all worlds, emerged as sparks of His infinite body.
Creation is not separate from the Divine… it is His very manifestation.
The hymn goes further: Rig Veda 10.90.13
Candramā manaso jātah Cakṣoḥ sūryo ajāyata Mukhad Indraś ca Agniś ca Prāṇād vāyur ajāyata
“The moon is born from His mind. The sun from His eyes. Indra and Agni from His mouth. Vayu (wind) from His breath.”
Even Time originates from Him. Every cosmic power is a limb of Purusha.
Rig Veda 10.90.14
Nābhyā āsīd antarikṣam Śīrṣṇo dyauḥ samavartata Padbhyām bhūmir diśaḥ śrotrāt Tathā lokān akalpayan
“From His navel came the sky. From His head came heaven. From His feet… the earth. From His ears… the directions. Thus the worlds were formed.”
The universe is literally the cosmic body.
But the most striking part of Purusha Sukta? It describes the first sacrifice… where Purusha Himself was offered.
Through that Yajna, the worlds, elements, and society itself were formed.
Rig Veda 10.90.12 says:
Brāhmaṇo’sya mukham āsīd Bāhū rājanyaḥ kṛtaḥ Ūrū tadasya yad Vaiśyaḥ Padbhyāṁ Śūdro ajāyata
From His mouth — Brahmana (knowledge) From His arms — Kshatriya (power) From His thighs — Vaishya (sustenance) From His feet — Shudra (service)
The universe is one body, expressed as society.
This is not about social hierarchy. It’s about unity in diversity.
All beings are limbs of one Purusha. Just as the head cannot exist without the feet, no part of creation is inferior.
The Sukta even hints at infinite universes. Countless worlds arise and dissolve in Him. Creation is eternal, cyclic, endless.
What modern science calls Multiverse… the Vedas declared ages ago.
Rishis later saw Purusha as Brahman… the Supreme Consciousness. Bhagvad Gita’s Vishwarupa Darshan is nothing but a vision of this Purusha. The same Cosmic Person shining across time.
The hidden meaning of the Purusha Sukta are —
- You are not separate from the universe.
- You are a limb of Purusha.
- To harm another is to harm yourself.
- To know the Self is to know the Cosmic Being.
The Purusha Sukta is recited even today:
- In Vedic rituals
- In temple consecrations
- In Bhagawan Vishnu’s worship
Because it is not just a hymn. It is a cosmic revelation.
The Purusha Sukta reveals the deepest truth of existence:
- The universe is the body of the Divine.
- We live in Him, breathe in Him, exist in Him.
- And beyond it all… He transcends.
This is Sanātana Dharma.
